WI-RC Prompt 1: Choose A Book
Updated: Jan 24, 2021
When I decided to do this challenge, I already had a book in mind. But after considering what I hoped to achieve, I reconsidered and instead short-listed three books that would help build my comp list and be something I'd enjoy reading.
I'm drawn to magical realism and the idea of the mysterious living among the everyday. Since my current work in progress includes elements of magical realism, I chose three books where magic plays a part. One was too fantastical to be considered a comp, and another didn't have enough magical components. I finally landed on The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen.
The mystery, the family intrigue, and yes, the aspects of magical realism all drew me to this book. Like my WIP, the story focuses on a girl whose mother has passed, and she is struggling to build a connection with the family that remains. I'm jazzed about the strange small town of Mullaby where the story is set. The author offers a virtual tour on her website (Flash Player required) to Explore Emily's World in Mullaby. I love how immersive that is, drawing us further into the world she has created.
With my book chosen, my challenge begins. Coming Up Next: WI-RC Prompt 2: The Protagonist
